Are you kidding me?
Uncategorized May 23rd, 2008So I have thought a lot about the following post. I lay in bed contemplating whether I should go forward, but I think the subject means enough to me and sums up a lot of what I believe in when it comes to my career as a professional athlete.
Let me start by saying that every time I hear a person on tv say, “I don’t mean to offend anyone….”, they end up offending someone. It just goes like that. I just returned home from my Mt Hood trip and my trusty Outside Magazine was waiting for me. This is the one mag that I subscribe to and I have read the mag for years. As I flipped through, I came across the article featuring Joe Papp. If you don’t know who Joe Papp is maybe you should just read that article at this point.
With this all being laid out, I will make this clear; Joe Papp, I am going to offend you. I am going to deeply offend you. I am going to offend you so bad that the state of Pennsylvania and most of the Eastern Seaboard are going to feel it.
As I read Papp’s Interview, I was reminded that he is a LIAR. He conned Outside into believing his lies about his importance in American, and even World, cycling. Even the article has some parts where the author seems to feel this way. It hurts because I would believe that such a respected mag would do some background checking on the subject of a major article. What I love is how Papp crys about how his “fellow Pros” won’t acknowledge his existence, how he is broke living with his mom and how he almost killed himself by using banned substances. The reason no Pros acknowledge the guy is because he was never a real pro. Professionals generally don’t acknowledge a guy who lied about being a pro. My definition of a professional is a person who gets a monthly paycheck from a company to race and train. As far as I know, no major Pro team ever paid Joe Papp a dime. No Pro team paid Papp a dime because he was never good enough to justify it. The reason Papp is broke is because he never got paid by a team to race and train which by definition does not make him a pro. Secondly, he cheated. A lot. When I really sat down and thought about it, in 13 years of team meetings, I never remember one of my teammates or directors saying “we needed to watch Joe Papp in a race”. Usually, what followed the words Joe Papp was “is a loser” or “is a cheater”. It makes me sick that he claims he was some kind of major player on the world cycling scene or even the domestic cycling scene. What Papp needs to realize is that he was a joke in cycling, that he is a LIAR and that he needs to just go away. I am sick of hearing your name. I am sick of your lies. You lied your way onto NPR, into Outside and got over by convincing USADA that you were actually somebody they needed to pay attention to. You sucked then and you still suck now and the only reason you were a blip is because you cheated and lied. You are continuing to insult every Pro in America with your lies about you being an equal. Enjoy your crappy life. I hope it only goes downhill from here. You seemed to spend a lot of time in Cuba so maybe you should go there. Sorry Cuba, but you let him marry one of your citizens.
Now that I have had my say let me clarify that I don’t think I am that special of a person or bike racer. I consider myself a rider with average talent and blue collar work ethic. I try really hard and I take my profession very seriously. I have been blessed with a long career with great teams. I get down on my knees and thank cycling everyday that it has allowed me make a good living for myself and my family. Even though I don’t get along with every guy I race against, in my mind I thank every guy everyday for playing a part in making my life as good as it has been. I absolutly don’t take cycling for granted and I try to respect it as much as I can. I am really greatfull that so many sponsors have made my caeer possible. Joe Papp does none of this. He disrespected and continues to disrespect every rider, sponsor and race. Without cycling, I am not the person I am. Papp is, and always will be, a liar. He continues to lie which means he would lie regardless of his position in life. The only thing he has brought to cycling is helping the general public equate cycling with dopers and cheaters. Thanks Papp. Just take, take, take. That is what guys like you do becasue you don’t respect any part of the sport. You never brought anything to this sport but trouble, so please for the love of God, just go away. Stop talking. I know that 5 minuets after I retire the cycling world will forget about me. That is part of it, and unlike Papp, I accept that fact. Cycling is so bloody hard and unforgiving. It is a fickle b****, but it is cool, and I really love it and I love what it has done for me. Outside, please do some background on guys like this. You are a respected peridoicle and you need to have a higher standard than what this article showed. Please stop using ink and paper on this guy.
My goal for a while is to not hear the name Joe Papp.

Sayers, you are one to throw stones. Didn’t you and Todd Herriott dope extensively together while at Health Net? Oh that’s right…you remember…Herriott and you doing the ‘NESP!
May 23rd, 2008 at 12:13 pm
hey mike, love the new blog, and thanks for the rant. i’ve heard similar things about the guy years ago, but don’t know him. anyways, by the way all us 9-5′ers in norcal love when you show up at the local races, thanks for being at cats hill, copperopolis, etc! hope to see you at hamilton on sunday. dont get offended if the cat 2’s mark the pros, it’s good learning and you’re going to rock us eventually anyways.
May 23rd, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Let’s me just say that the cycling world most certainly WILL NOT forget you “five minutes” after you retire.
You should submit this to ‘letters to the editor’ at Outside.
Hope you and your family are doing well!
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:34 pm
“let me start by saying”
thanks for “laying it out there”
“now that i’ve had my say ”
“i just have to say. . ”
thanks MIKE for being so terribly honest!

Havoc,
I could not have said it better myself. Papp is an oxygen thief both on and off the bike!
Rest assured that all will be right with Joe in the world of KARMA. There’s no chance that he sleeps to well at night! And shame on Outside mag. for taking all of his bullsh_t for face value!
May 23rd, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Have not read the article, but will probably go buy the issue…the cover alone is reason enough!
I have heard Papp’s name tossed around for a few years now by fellow amateurs, as well as pros (in interviews, blogs, etc.). I am not familiar with the details of his story, but I was wondering if Mike or anyone could elaborate on what he is lying about, aside from having been a professional cyclist. I am not taking anyone’s side, I am just curious to hear some more facts regarding the allegations he has made. Exagerrating one’s athletic status is certainly dishonest, but that in itself is not adequate grounds for distrusting all future statements.
I believe NPR and (to a lesser extent) USADA to be very reputalbe organizations. As a result, the argument that Papp continues to “trick” these groups into listening to him is confusing.
In this blog, as with other professional cyclists who have spoken/written on this subject, the response to Joe Papp has been nothing short of vitriolic. One must question such a passionate opposition to the free speech, truthful or not, of any person.
There is no one who does not deserve to be heard. With an open dialogue a balanced assessment of all input should yield the truth. And yes, I realize that the American public generally has trouble with a balanced assessment of situations!
Mike, I am an avid follower of yours and many of the other blogs at missingsaddle and I hope you continue the good work both racing and writing. I hope to see more discussion on this topic too!
May 24th, 2008 at 8:52 am
So what you’re saying is that if a high school linebacker in Texas dopes because his peers and heroes dope, even though he has no chance of making it in the NFL, he isn’t as harmed physically and psychologically as Lyle Alzado?
Why does one have to have been a top pro to have been harmed by doping? Wake up honey, club riders are now doping because they want to be like you. Is that a legacy that pro cycling should be proud of?
Joe Papp is a controversial person, no doubt about it. His willingness to share his negative experiences with doping and it’s consequences should be commended.
Everyone has a right to second chances. Stop piling on and give the guy a break.
May 24th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Ding ding ding! Very well said. That article made me cringe.
May 24th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Joe Papp!
What a thief.
May 24th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Interesting posts. Your fellow riders commend you, yet your readers ask for more info. I wonder why. Thou Dost Protest Too Much?
May 24th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I don’t think anyone who systematically and repeatedly doped over the years deserves any more chances, I totally agree with HAVOC here.
May 24th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Not all of us readers need more info.
Great post and here’s to the rest of you that we love because your not like that guy, darn - his name escapes me already!?!
May 24th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
one more thing….he did supposedly marry a Cuban, kind of?
now it is the end of the story.
Good Show Mike! I’ll give you a Hip Hip! Hip Hip! Hoora!
May 24th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
sayers. wtf is wrong with you? the guy is ready to kill himself and you rip him a new one because you feel threatened that the glamorous image of a pro cyclist you hold onto so tightly is being compromised. you make 40-50k a year i bet. that’s fucking peanuts in the real world. you act as if being a continental pro is like… a big deal. i think you are the one who needs to get real.
p.s. outside magazine is the biggest piece of trash publication out there. its for fat 50 year old men who think that by buying a fucking garmin computer they will become explorers. why the hell you spend your hard earned money on that trash is beyond me.
May 25th, 2008 at 6:20 am
Hey, “a fellow pro”. Fuck off! Don’t belittle Mike for doing what he loves and making more money than you ever did while doing it. And don’t belittle professional cycling. While your in the “real world” mike’s off travelling the world, racing and riding his bike, and making money doing what he loves. The “real world”, what the fuck are you talking about. Mike’s been a pro cyclist for over 10 years its pretty safe to say that’s the “real world” for him. Again, fuck off! and go back to your “real world” cubicle.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:02 am
my cubicle is right next to mike’s in the pro peleton. have a nice day.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:33 am
I think the only thing offensive here is the horrendous misspelling of the word “periodical,” and Dawn Richardson’s misplaced interest in the mental health of dopers. Everything else is spot on.
Feel free to let Joe know he’s a douchebag directly: joe@joepapp.com.
May 25th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Well said Mike.
I reckon “a fellow pro”… isn’t too keen on his job.
Man-up and retire.
May 25th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Mike, Dawn called you honey, i think she likes you.

Just did a quick Google search for “Mike Sayers Papp”, and found this gem. I believe this was a 160km stage, brutal, huge attrition, Papp probably wasn’t the only doper in the field (in addition to Heredia, I mean) and look - he finished 10th and Mike Sayers = DNF…

McCORMACK WINS THE TOUR OF CT
Torrential Downpour Splinters the Field
Danbury, CT (May 23, 2004) - Mark McCormack, Colavita Olive Oil Cycling Team won the Tour of Connecticut with a total of 101 points, besting Charles Dionne, Webcor Builders, and Shawn Milne, Fior di Frutta.
The final stage of the TOC began under sunny skies and high humidity and finished under a torrential downpour peppered with thunder and lightning. Only 25 finished out of 150 starters. The pack made it into downtown Danbury for the 14 finishing laps after completing 80 miles around Candlewood Lake Park before the deluge.
Horner and Dominique Perras, Team Ofoto and King of the Mountain winner, charged into town ahead of the group by over 2 minutes with 14 laps to go. With each lap, the peleton closed the gap slightly, but lacked the power or conviction to reel the two back in. With seven to go, they closed to just over a minute, but could not shorten the gap. Lightening and thunder started to threaten as Horner made a successful break and dropped Perras as the skies opened. With slick roads and visibility cut, it became every man for himself. After Horner, Dionne placed second and Ciaran Power, Navigators Insurance came in third for the stage.
McCormack remained strong throughout the tour and came in fourth in Danbury solidifying his overall win. McCormack now turns his attention to the USPRO race June 6, where he will defend his championship title in peak form.

I may be wrong, but I think Mike was in the break all day that day. And also once it started getting dangerous with the rain and you had no chance of winning the right move was a right turn to the van.
and btw thats lame to compare like that, I like both Joe Papp and Mike on a personal level, but I think Mike should be respected as he is one of the most professional riders I got to work with over the past few years. On top of that, I dont think Mike was arguing that he was better than Joe.

Did you read the list of shit papp was on? If any of the guys he was in the pack with that were clean were on that much stuff, they would have ridden away from the field.
papp was a decent cat 2 that was doped up to be nationally competitive.
“pro” could mean just racing full time and not working much.
May 26th, 2008 at 8:24 am
Just goes to show you can’t polish a turd.
May 26th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Mike Jones, my best bud. I have to agree with you. Mainly because your my best friend. But some of the things you said last year in team meetings, were some of the things Mike Sayers has said for year. Like shooting bullets and stuff. Priceless. Even though Sayers made fun of my attack in the TOG, which by the way I wasn’t peeing I just simply went off the fron to take points for our man guy. Any ways back to the real point. The point is that I never heard Sayers threaten to kill someone during a race. I can’t say the Same for Papp. The little guy told John Puffer the biggest dude out there he was gonna kill him. Doping and winning races is one thing, telling someone you’ll kill them, is just nuts. I never have that ill will towards anyone.
And since Mike has left me alone this year at JB. I have been listening to the Art Of Zen by Allen Watts. I hope some of you reading this, will google Allen and listen to what he has to say. It may calm everyone down and bring us all back to neutral. May peace be with us all.
Namaste.
May 26th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Mike Jones. I hope your back to Blogging I’ve been on Strike since you left us. Listen I’ve been at some race this weekend I’ll call you on Tuesday and give you some prices. I don’t know if they even have your bike in stock.. Im not a direct dealer, I just go thru another supplier. Does anyone know that you sign for that team and is making a return to the Pro Ranks. I’ll keep it hush hush I promise. Love Bird.
May 26th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Mike is a hard man, a no-compromises type who has a right to be resentful if a cheater takes places and prize money from himself and his team. True, what professional status Papp attained is debatable, but is not the main point.
And I worked that ToC race. I and others covering the days’ break can’t remember if Mike was up there or not, but the rain that bucketed down on us as we hit the short finishing circuits meant the officials pulled all but the closest chasers behind Horner. Sayers could have worked his ass off all day only to get yanked at the end because the length of the final circuit was too short. And that’s not the main point either.
And, pro racing isn’t the “real world” either
And who cares what a rag Outside magazine is? They printed an article years ago extolling the virtues of doping. A SoCal amateur took on a whole “program” and reported how awesome he felt after back to back double centuries. His sole complaint was EPO headaches. Interesting but mis-guided.
No the problem is fairness. Cheats suck the blood out of life’s passions. Mike wouldn’t suffer like he does if he knew that all his efforts would be in vain and a righteous outcome would be stolen. The Joe Papps or Richard Virenques of our world are weak men. Mike is trying to be a strong man, battling on in a stacked-deck game.
May 26th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Hey Adam Meyerson… Wasn’t it roid rage that caused you to cave in the side of someone’s head with your fist at a bike race before you became a pro??? Or were you just a huge asshole?
NONE of us should judge anyone else too harshly.
May 26th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Hey, Hey Adam Meyerson
Please try and keep up Adam GOT HIS head bashed in by Scott Mercer. I doubt Meyerson uses drugs (like that cheater Papp) but he does seem to be an asshole, which might or might not be why some smashed his head in.
May 26th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
ummmm…. wasnt that story about myerson the other way around?
Honestly, thats what i seem to remember, or maybe there was another incident.
Bird- i miss you, maybe i can come to philly and room with you even though i dont own a bike, its not like it would make me more useful than last year there.

May 26th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
I never heard of this guy before and I follow bike racing and used to race as a Senoir 2 in the 90’s.
I had a dream of turning pro and it really pisses me off when I all these pros are caught cheating and then turn around and become anti-doping activists. Come on they didn’t feel bad when they where winning and cheating…
May 26th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
WTF? Shouldn’t you be pissed off at Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis? Those guys did much more damage to pro cyclists reputations than Joe Papp.
May 26th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
“fellow pro” why don’t you sack up and use your real name? because perhaps there are holes in your arguement, or lack of credibility, if you were to reveal yourself?
…and what kind of guy lists some results from years ago where mike was probably working his ass for a teammate?
we all have reproachable arguements/statements/lives. .. at least mike stands by his, and doesn’t hide behind some pseudonym.
May 26th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Good stuff, Mike. I’ve been wondering ever since cyclingnews.com gave Papp a column - who the fuk is that guy anyway? Does anyone actually care?
Okay, so then Papp shows up in the Floyd court as a witness for the prosecution. Wtf? Hey, I don’t run in your circles, guys, but even I was like, HUH? Who brought that god damn guy in? I mean at least bring in a real professional whose ‘truth’ somebody (anybody!) might actually respect.
And now Outside fell for the Papp Smear? Ouch & surprising. They’re usually better than that.
I dug your rant, Mike. My opinion on that topic is now validated. Yeah! And indeed, people WILL remember you when you retire. Ciao.

In my opinion a “real pro” is a person who gets a monthly paycheck from a company to race and train FULL-TIME. That makes Joe Papp as much a “real pro” as a good percentage of domestic pros that get $10/yr plus expenses, prize money and a bike.
And to the knucklehead that brought up Lyle Alzado - even his own personal doctor says doping had nothing to do with his death. Every time I see some clown mention him I know they have no clue WTF they’re talking about.

10$ a year? howd you know?
Did you see my west virginia pro cycling team contract?
mike jones
May 27th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
What am I considered. I have a Pro Contract, and I do get paid. I also own a Bicycle Store. And get paid there as well. Does that make me an idiot, A Pro Cyclist, or just The Bird. Please Only Mike Jones can respond.
Your best bud ever, the bird.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Jones, Is that DJ Velospike, Powers? You know he has been tearing up the turn tables. You should see his crab move. Very fluid wrist action.

best bud Bird- you know since I dont have cell service this summer in the boonies this might actually be the best way to communicate, I dont think sayers would mind.
Bird that makes you powers teammate which that would make you an idiot.

Mike I need to know if you want the 19″ or the 21″ frame. If anyone knows what mike jones looks like and can help us figure out what size bike he needs. We would greatly appreciate your help. Mike is 6′2″ with a 33″ inseem. Mike when I ship you the bike, would you like me to include some beans. You might still have some huh.
Love always The Bird.

Actually that was supposed to read $10K/year. Good thing I’m not a professional Intarweb poster.

[…] from general “haters” to actually disliking someone sepcific. I agree with Mike Sayers. i don’t like Joe Papp. as a matter of fact my first post right here on missingsaddle was on […]

You people are funny, especially Suzette.
Suzette Says:
“Good stuff, Mike. I’ve been wondering ever since cyclingnews.com gave Papp a column - who the fuk is that guy anyway? Does anyone actually care?”
“Does anyone actually care?” Please tell me that was a rhetorical question, because 1) the original blog post was all about Joe Papp [Mike Sayers in bed thinking about Joe Papp - scary stuff], and 2) 40+ readers posted comments!
If you actually didn’t care about Joe Papp you idiots wouldn’t be writing about him.
May 30th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I think its great Scott and Mike come out on boards and say who they are when they post. I might not agree with what they say but it takes balls to speak your heart in public when you are a “pro”. Besides, go ask any guy walking down the street who any people on here are and you’ll get the same answer from 100% of the people…uhhhh who? Mention Floyd, now that’s a different story. As far as I can tell we all wipe are ass the same way and are equal so pro, no pro, let this jackoff speak his mind and suffer his own consequences, this is what makes America great…no? Someday even Lance will be forgotten amongst the general population…let it work itself out, smile and go train your balls/muff off. That’s what cycling is all about to me…fun!

that little weasel papp had agreed to be on my radio show [see the link and follow to “weekends” and click on the drop down to “kim west cycling”] last night to discuss his doping experience and his thoughts and then be available for questions from listeners. the show begins at 600 pm central time. at 555 pm, just as i was going into the studio to begin, i did a final check of emails, and i had received one at 539 pm, from joe, saying that on advice of counsel he was backing out.
lyin’ weasel. listen to my thoughts on the show. thanks for saying what you said, mike. i was much too nice to him.
and by the way, if you or any or your buds would like to appear on my show, get in touch. it would be nice to hear from pros who love the sport and work hard day after day to make it the fine thing that it is.
June 7th, 2008 at 11:50 am
nice mindless rant. spel ceck wood help yer credibility though.
seriously, although i’m sure you’re a great guy, mike, your writing makes you look bad. when i see this kind of aggression i wonder what’s going on with the person doing the attacking. everything o.k. in your world?

Thanks for telling me about your blog on the River Ride tonight. It’s decent; very decent, and readable. I was going to drill you about awkward sentence structure and the like, but it would just seem like petty payback for making me suffer on the ride this evening. Truth be told, it quite well done.
